We will be painting the concrete wall on 6200 South {between Laurel Canyon & High Bluff} to cover up the "Patchwork Quilt" of painted over graffiti. A great big THANKS to West Valley City, they will be providing the paint! Bring the whole family & be sure to wear clothes that will be ok if they get paint on them. If you have any paint sprayers, please bring them - to help fill in the crevices on the wall! If you have a paint roller, please bring that too! We'll also be cleaning up garbage in the field. Parking will be available!

FYI - Neighborhood Alert

With the permission of the family involved, I wanted to let you all know that a home on Mill Valley Lane was broken into yesterday morning {September 12}. It was about 10:30 am when this occured. Thankfully, the next door neighbor happened to be leaving their residence & saw a suspicious car that alerted them. Then they saw the person coming & going from the home...which led them to call the police.
The suspects broke a basement window to enter the home... WVC police & forensics came to collect information that will hopefully lead to the arrests of these people.

I am unsettled by how brazen this crime was & how it was early in the day...just reminds us to always keep an eye out for our homes & our neighbors, too! The neighbor did all the right things:

Noticed an unfamiliar vehicle in front of the home
Kept a watchful eye & tried to get a license plate
Called the police! As neighbor's we can look out for each other!

The suspects drove a black grand am, with front end damage & were described as being in their early 20's.

What a wonderful NNO event we had!!! We had about 350-400 people come to our neighborhood block party. I think the highlight of the event was the West Valley City Police K9 Unit that did a demonstration for us. We were excited to also have in attendance our WVC Police & Fire Chiefs! I was glad to see so many people take a moment to approach them with their concerns. A great big thanks to the great residents of our community that helped this block party be so successful!

Graffiti

Recently, our neighborhood has been hit hard with some aggravating graffiti. We cleaned up some on Saturday & again tonight. We cleaned up about 70+ items of graffiti on fences, mail boxes, utility boxes, street signs, stop signs & light posts. Now, normally I would never publicize any type of graffiti...but I really need help finding out who might be doing this. From the hearts, sad faces & the bubbly letters - I tend to think it might be girls doing this. I also heard of a resident who has seen a group of girls walking at night with spray cans. We need to see if anyone knows or recognizes these "tags". The main words seen over & over are "ZELK, DUF, A.G."

I have been alerted by the WVC Public Works Department, that someone has vandalized {again} the street lights on 6200 South, between Laurel Canyon Dr. & High Bluff Dr. Please, keep your eyes out for anything suspicious. If you see anyone near the boxes at the base of the lights fiddling with wire, that is not in a WVC truck, please call the police!

The last time these thieves stole the wiring, it cost the city {YOU & ME as taxpayers} several THOUSANDS of dollars to repair the lights.

Fund Raisers in West Valley City Misrepresenting Themselves as Police Department Officials

West Valley City – West Valley City has received calls from residents reporting individuals soliciting funds door-to-door representing themselves as members of the Police Department. Representatives of the City do not solicit funds from residents door-to-door. However, West Valley City and its employees may publicly support charitable causes and may engage residents to increase awareness.

West Valley City Code requires that all solicitors obtain a certificate through the City’s Business Licensing Division; the Certificate is required to be carried by the solicitor at all times. Additionally, a City-issued photo identification badge is required to be worn. Residents are encouraged to contact the City to confirm the registration of a solicitor or to report inappropriate activity. If safety and security is a concern, residents are encouraged to contact the Police Department; the non-emergency contact number for the Police Department is 801-840-4000.

Snow Removal Reminder

It's that time of year again to think about snow & snow removal. Here is some information on how WVC works to remove snow & how citizens can help make snow removal more effective & effecient.

Please do not park on the streets during or right after a snowstorm. The snowplows cannot see your vehicles & cannot plow the streets clean with cars parked at the curb. It is especially important to keep all vehicles out of cul-de-sacs. The plows have a hard time getting around the circles & it is impossible to plow if there is anything parked in the circle.
All residents are responsible for clearing their own property, including sidewalks & the area in front of mailboxes & fire hydrants. This needs to be done within 24 hours after a storm ceases.
City Ordinance prohibits placing snow in gutters or streets from snow blowers or shovels.

City Streets have been divided into 4 priority catagories as follows:
Streets with higher intensity use have a higher priority for snow removal service. Streets, which require proportionally more time for snow removal, have the lowest priority.

Priority One - These are arterial & major collector streets, generally with a right-of-way width of 66 feet or more, & average daily traffic greater than 5,000
Priority Two - These are generally subdivision collector streets, typically with a pavement width of at least 30 feet. Incuded in this category are streets serving emergency response facilities & schools. Also included are streets with hills & sharp curves where traction problems often cause hazardous driving conditions.
Priority Three - All other residential streets (excluding cul-de-sacs).
Priority Four - Cul-de-sacs & other dead end streets. The city incurs proportionally more time & costs clearing snow from cul-de-sacs than on typical "uninterrupted" stretches of streets. Because of the high cost-to-benefit ratio, cul-de-sacs & dead end streets have the lowest priority & will be the last areas adressed.

Where did my car go?

As the colder weather approaches many people may be tempted to leave their vehicle warming up in their driveway in order to warm the interior of their car and to help in removing snow and ice from the windows. Unfortunately, the West Valley City Police Department receives many calls every year from citizens whose vehicles were stolen under just these circumstances. In 2007, seventy-three vehicles were stolen while they were left running in front of a home or in a driveway.

Be aware that some insurance companies will not cover the loss of your stolen car if the car was left running unattended when it was stolen.

When you are tempted to start your vehicle and leave it to warm up while you finish getting ready for work or school, outside gas stations, cash machines and local stores, remember how inconvenient it will be when you step outside and your car is missing. Don’t leave your engine running, even if you’ll only be gone for a matter of seconds - a thief only needs a few seconds to pounce.

Halloween Safety Tips

Here are some safety tips for the Trick or Treaters in our neighborhood:

Eat a good meal before trick-or-treating.
Wear reflective clothing.
Carry a flashlight or some type of lighting device.
Use sidewalks when going up to homes and don’t cut through yards.
A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.
Children should not enter a stranger’s home or car, even if invited. Talk with your children about this important rule.
Homeowners should not invite children inside.
Accept treats only in the doorway, not from anyone on the street.
Parents should examine all candy before eating it.
Plan your entire route and make sure that your family knows what it is.
Be very cautious of strangers.
Only trick-or-treat at homes that have their porch light on.
Walk...don't run.
Cross the street at the corner or in a crosswalk.
Wear a watch.
Don't play near lit jack-o-lanterns.
Take a cell phone with you, if possible.
Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. If wearing a mask, make sure that eye openings are big enough for peripheral vision.

Some Safety tips for the parents:

Turn on your porch light.
For adults who are celebrating there are some things to consider when creating that "perfect" Halloween Costume.
- Make sure that any accessories, such as fake guns, knifes, and other potentially dangerous items are not mistaken for the real thing.
- Fire safety and visibility are also important for adult costumes. Apply the same standards to adult costumes as you do to your children's.

Remove objects from your yard that might present a hazard.
Drive slowly all evening...you never know what creature may suddenly cross your path.

Minimize Criminal Activity

Make sure your property is well lit at night. Leave porch lights on at night. Install motion lights where needed. Criminals do not want to be seen.
Keep your home secured. Keep doors, windows, sheds, & garage doors closed & locked. Keep doors locked while at home. Never leave your home unsecure while not at home. Do not give criminals an easy opportunity to enter your home.
Keep vehicles locked & windows fully rolled up at all times while not in use. Aleays keep valuables out of sight. A good rule to use is to never leave anything in your vehicle that you would not want stolen. Never leave credit cards or checks in open sight. Always know where you keep them.
Shred all documents that contain any personal information.
Remove mail promptly from your mailbox after delivery. If going on vacation, ask a trusted neighbor to pick up your mail, or contact the postal service to hold your mail while away.

Suggestions for reporting suspicious behavior:

Slow moving vehicles, possibly "casing" homes
Parked vehicles that are occupied
Abandoned vehicles
Strangers walking alond the side yard of houses or going into the backyard
Excessive personal property stored in cars or garages
Someone going door-to-door in a residential area
Forcible entry to a home
Waiting or loitering in front of a home
Please make a note of suspicious people or vehicles. Write down the physical description of people and vehicle description, along with license plates, if possible.

Free CPR Classes

Speed Hump Update

I asked Erik Brondum, with WVC Public Works if the speed humps have helped with the speed in our neighborhood. He emailed me & said:

The speed humps are helping. On High Bluff we went from 35mph+ before to 27mhp now. When we can finish collecting data in the spring I will have a final report.

That is so exciting!!! That is huge...can't wait to see what this report tells us.

Lodestone Park

I received an email from Angelo regarding the LODESTONE PARK! The location of the park will be in that field north of 6200 South between High Bluff Dr & Laurel Canyon Dr. Here is the information that he sent me...

Since our last meeting the following has occurred regarding Lodestone Park:

1. The County finalized the acquisition of the 47-acres surrounding the 15-acre park site, so we now have 62-acres.
2. Work on the master plan has been modified to include the whole 62-acres.
3. A questionnaire was sent out to nearly 3,000 residents surrounding the park, and we had a 12% return.

We are now preparing for an open house, where a several new master plan concepts will be displayed, reviewed, and discussed. Please join us on Thursday, January 14 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School (5850 South 5600 West).

There is a great resource of information in the West Valley City's newsletter, it's called UpDate. The link is HERE to read it!

I especially like the message from Mayor Dennis J. Nordfelt & I'd like to thank him for his service to our community!

The other article I liked & learned a lot from is titled, "Is my basement apartment legal?" by Ed Domain, Cheif Building Official. I especially liked point 12. He says, "If your basement apartment is located under a typical single family home, there is a good chance it is illegal. City zoning regulations generally prohibit basement apartments in neighborhoods dedicated as single family zones (DIAMOND SUMMIT IS ZONED AS SINGLE FAMILY). Less than 1% of the land in West Valley City is zoned for duplexes." I found this to be very interesting...

There was also information about Christmas Tree disposal. All West Valley City residents can dispose of their Christmas trees between December 26 - January 18 at City Park east parking lot ( 3400 South 4400 West) & West View Park parking lot (6020 West 4100 South). All lights, stands, nails, screws, bags & decorations must be removed. Residents can also use the City's bulky waste service to dispose of trees.

Gratitude...

Tonight, I went before City Council during the Public Comment period of the City Council Meeting. I wanted to express my gratitude for the Speed Bumps that were put in our neighborhood. I've been so happy with the reaction of residents... I've had many people tell me that they are grateful, that they feel it has been effective, along with the raised crosswalks. I have noticed that people have slowed down...I understand it won't be a cure to the problem, but I know that it has helped. I would also like to mention here how wonderful it is to have Steve Vincent as our Councilman. He is awesome! He really cares about our city & about our neighborhood. I have spoken with him often about my concerns through the years & he's always listened & helped with the solution. I appreciate that. I think democracy is at it's best in city goverment. I love it! I also have to thank Erik Brondum with the Public Works Department. I can't tell you how much I called him & he always called me back! He was great to work with & I appreciate all the times he came out to our neighborhood to observe for himself & to meet with me, he clearly went above & beyond his job. There are so many people I wish to express my gratitude, for the residents in Diamond Summit who have cared & have called the police for patrol, or called Steve Vincent to talk about the situation! I also have to thank my cute family...for being patient with passing out fliers, holding meetings, going to meetings, going to city council & all the things I've done to work on this! Thank you for all who have supoorted this cause...& now, let's remember to keep driving slow!!!

Graffiti

This is our Neighborhood Watch Blog's 100th post & guess what it's about? Graffiti. Yesterday, we were hit with graffiti in several areas in our neighborhood. It's really frustrating!! It costs so much money to clean up...& actually all of us, as tax-payers pay to clean this vandalism up. If you have been hit with graffiti, please remove it within 24 hours. I have a supply of various colors of paint that the city has equipped me with. Paint to match utility boxes, poles & cement walls, as well as vinyl wipes to remove from vinyl fences. Please email me if you need some supplies. But, before you clean it up...take a picture & report it to the police. Please keep an eye out for suspicious behavior or vehicles. Call the non-emergency number at 801-840-4000! Or if it's "in progress" or life-threatening, call 911.

Be Cautious About Giving Info to Census Workers

With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way, as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data. The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice:

If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you do not know into your home.

Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, it will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers nor will employees solicit donations.

Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, they will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census.

Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Just another reminder to please, please slow down in the neighborhood!!

I was coming home from Walmart & came upon a horrible car accident on 6200 South between Laurel Canyon & the LDS Church meetinghouse. It was a single car who apparently (by my observation of the skid marks) drove up the side of that hill where the street narrows, then rolled several times, breaking a part of the cement wall & also taking out a street light. They took the man by life flight & I'm hoping that all is well. There was a dog ejected & a dog that was trapped, but we saw animal control & the policemen rescue the dog that was trapped. Of course, tons of people were present & venting their frustration to me about how the road narrows & how dangerous it was. Most wanted to know (including me) if there is something that can be done, maybe level some of that dirt, so it's not so dangerous...I will follow up with Erik Brondum, with WVC Public Works on Monday.

4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.

5. If it snows while you’re out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.

6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don’t let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it’s set. That makes it too easy.

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom—and your jewelry. It’s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

8. It’s raining, you’re fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door—understandable. But understand this: I don’t take a day off because of bad weather.

9. I always knock first. If you answer, I’ll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don’t take me up on it.)

10. Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

11. Here’s a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids’ rooms.

16. I’ll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he’ll stop what he’s doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn’t hear it again, he’ll just go back to what he was doing. It’s human nature.

17. I’m not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?

18. I love looking in your windows. I’m looking for signs that you’re home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I’d like. I’ll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.

19. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It’s easier than you think to look up your address.

20. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it’s an invitation.

21. If you don’t answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.

Speed Hump & Crosswalk Update

The speed hump installation is moving along. It was the intent of the City to have this project completed before school starts on Monday. That is not going to happen, but the contractor has committed to put more resources on the project to get it done as quickly as they can. In the meantime your patience is appreciated. Five of these speed humps are also raised school crosswalks. Two of them have been installed as of today. The other three will be painted until the humps are installed. All of the signs will be installed this week as well.

The Vial of Life is an emergency preparedness program to help make West Valley City more disaster resistant and resilient through citizen volunteer involvement. The purpose of the Vial of Life program is to encourage residents, particularly those who are home bound, living alone,or with special medical needs, to compile personal information and place it where it can be easily located by 911 responders in the event of an emergency. The vial comes with a personal information sheet, a vial to keep the information sheet(s) in, and a refrigerator magnet to place on the refrigerator door to alert emergency personal of the homes participation in the program. When KSL contacted me about doing a story about my use of "technology" for our neighborhood watch, I had no idea that so many people would visit this blog. I started this blog back in 2007 to help pass the word along to those in our NW's boundaries. I feel it has been an effective tool in communicating with residents! I am thankful for the kind emails people have sent me. For me, Neighborhood Watch is something I feel strongly about. For about 6-7 years, I have been working with city officials about the speed on our street. I am totally going to take advantage of the attention that the blog is receiving to pass on this information that I was given by a West Valley City policeman all those years ago, who is now LT. Merritt. I have handed this flier out to so many people. Please, print it off & hand out to others. I hope it will help to give us all a reminder that we need to slow down in our neighborhoods! :)

1. Please, please slow down! There were 2 incidents involving speeding and/or inattention while driving today on High Bluff Drive. One, could have cost some people their lives. Please slow down & pay attention to street signs!

2. For Mobile Patrol tonight, we stopped at 12 homes that had their garage doors open. Please take a moment to check & make sure that you have closed your garage door before you go to bed at night. Also, take a moment to look out your windows & check if your neighbor's garage doors are closed. If they aren't, call or knock on their door. When people leave their garage doors open, we are all affected. They are a "crime of opportunity" waiting to happen... Just remember that the only way to fend off these types of crime is to "look out for each other"!

WVC Leash Laws

I had a resident ask me about Leash Laws this past week. It is a sensitive topic for dog owners & neighbors who feel frustrated by dogs roaming. I contacted Craig Thomas, who is my direct link to WVC for these types of questions. He found out the answer from Nate Beckstead with WVC Animal Services.

Nate said the following:
"Our codes require all animals to be under control at all times. So it does not matter the size or breed. The only way I know to have the dog under control is to have it on a leash. Electric collars would not be considered under control."

So, if a dog owner has a dog in their yard, but not on a leash, then it is against city code. If you have a concern, Craig gave this advice, "You can ask him to have an officer go to the home and and help the pet owner understand the code in a casual discussion. Chances are the officer will simply say there has been a request made by a neighbor to ask the pet owner to have the animal on a leash and to clean up after the pet. Names usually remain anonymous because we do not want to create contention in the neighborhoods, but it is always a good idea to specifically ask him to keep names anonymous. I think they are like code enforcement in that if they continue to get complaints, more aggressive reminders are issued."

I just received a phone call from Craig Thomas regarding the Adisory news release. There was a major misunderstanding... Here is the corrected information:

An advisory released yesterday indicated that a contractor had been working throughout West Valley City and was misrepresenting the fact that they were working with the blessing of the City.

The contractor in question has been contacted, and City officials realize that this was a case of miscommunication between the residents involved. The contractor mentioned, Amen Paving, has not misrepresented themselves in any way.

Residents are still encouraged to call the City with any concerns or questions they may have about contractors, and to verify that anyone representing themselves on behalf of the City is legitimate.

Most of you have heard that one of our residents had their home broken into on Friday, Feb 6th. The person who broke in, went through the backyard & broke into the sliding glass door. This is just a good reminder that we can all just keep an eye out for each other. Look out your blinds, be aware of your neighbor's cars...so that you'll notice when something is different, if you see someone walking around the side yard & you don't recognize them...call the police, or call your neighbor. I will make sure that our Mobile Patrol is more consistent... It will take all of us looking out for each other to keep our neighborhood safe!

Many of you know how hard I've worked with the city to get traffic calming devices in our neighborhood... I have done this to help our neighborhood be a safer place for our children & our families. For those of us that live on the 3 main streets (Wakefield, Laurel Canyon & High Bluff) are constantly affected by speeding vehicles. We moved into our home when High Bluff was a cul-de-sac & was not extended to 6200 South. It was a hard thing to watch a calm street go to a street with cars going 30-35 mph on average & sometimes speeds up to 50 mph & higher. I know & realize that speed bumps will take a few seconds of your time to slow down, & I worry that that few seconds will cause some to vote no...& it is to you that I plead to please vote yes to speed bumps. Please, let us not be so worried about a few seconds of having to slow down that we compromise the safety of the kids in this neighborhood. Currently, there has been a letter that has gone out to everyone within our neighborhood. This is the opportunity we have to have our voice heard & vote for speed bumps. Dear Resident,

The Diamond Summit subdivision was selected for a traffic calming pilot program for West Valley City. The purpose of this pilot program was to evaluate the effectiveness of a proposed Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP). Diamond Summit was selected because the main streets through the neighborhood met certain criteria such as high traffic volume and high speeds on residential streets.

The City recently installed temporary speed humps, which have since been removed, on Wakefield Way and Laurel Canyon Drive. The speed humps were designed to slow drivers to between 20 and 25 mph. The data collected during the study shows that the speed humps were effective in reducing the speed in the area.

Also, there was an overall drop in traffic volume. It cannot be determined if the drop in volume was a direct result of the speed humps since the volume also decreased on High Bluff Drive, which did not have speed humps. However, studies in other parts of the country have concluded that speed humps do influence traffic volume.

At this time, the City would like your vote on whether or not permanent speed humps should be installed on Wakefield Way, High Bluff Drive and Laurel Canyon Drive. The speed humps will not necessarily be installed in the same locations as were the temporary speed humps. The final locations are yet to be determined.

Free flu shots for anyone while supplies last at City Hall

Wednesday, December 3, 2008 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

West Valley City has partnered with SelectHealth and Community Nursing Services to offer a free flu shot clinic to the community. On December 3, from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m., the flu shots will be available at West Valley City Hall (3600 South Constitution Blvd.) on a first come first served basis while supplies last. This clinic is open to the public.

The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated, according to Meg Danielson, R.N., manager of Health and Wellness at SelectHealth. "Yearly flu vaccination can begin in early fall. But since the flu season often peaks in February, it isn’t too late to receive a flu shot up until January or February if you are unable to get one earlier," said Danielson.

SelectHealth will also hold a free clinic at Monroe Elementary (4450 West 3100 South) on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Now that fall is here & school is back in full swing, kids will be spending more time away from home & out of your sight. Follow these tips from the National Crime Prevention Council to help keep your kids safer & help "Take A Bite Out Of Crime."

Check out the routs your child takes when walking or biking to school - whatever your child's age. Check out school bus or regular bus stop areas if your child uses them. Look for hazardous short cuts that might tempt kids to take them out of public view. Agree on safe walking & biking areas with your children.
Tell your child that anything that makes him or her uncomfortable or suspicious should be reported immediately to you & to school officials.
Make sure your child travels with others to & from school; kids in groups are generally safer.
Encourage your child's school to provide anger management & conflict resolution training & to consider enlisting students as mediators for their peers - even elementary age children have done well.
Ask about the safety plan for your child's school. How are local Police involved? How are students & parents involved? What emergencies have been considered?

There are a few things I'd like to update you all on...

There have been some homes that have had their garages rummaged through & had stuff stolen. They have all been during the day. Please remember to keep your garage doors closed, your car doors locked & your home doors locked. If you see that a neighbor has left their garage door open, please try to call them or go over & knock on their door.
Before you go to bed at night, please check & make sure that your LIGHTS are ON! Porch lights, side lights, motion lights, the lights on the side of your garage...they are statistically proven to deter crime! Also, make sure that your garge door is closed...I drove throught the neighborhood tonight around 10pm & stopped at 6 homes to tell them that their garage door was open. Only 1 person was aware of it being open.
And now for some good news... I saw the contracted contractor spraying the street on 6200 South to mark where the STREET LIGHTS will be placed! Waaahooooooooooooo!

So remember...Lights ON! Garages CLOSED! Be safe...And please, "look out for each other"!

Traffic Calming Pilot Program in Diamond Summit

I hope that you all have received the letter from West Valley City's Public Works Department. If you haven't, please click on the above picture to read the content. I have been working with WVC Public Works Department City Transportation Engineer, Erik Brondum, for quite some time. This is great that the city is using our neighborhood for this traffic calming pilot program. Not only is it bringing attention to this issue in our neighborhood, but it is helping to resolve this issue for other neighborhoods as well. For those of us that live on Wakefield, Laurel Canyon & High Bluff know first hand the necessity of these traffic calming devices. I am looking forward to finding out the results of the data that is being collected from these measures. It is my hope that all residents will take time to think about what it takes for our children to be safe. In my opinion, it does require speed humps in addtion to the driver feedback signs. I'll be sure to keep updates on this blog when I receive them. I truly believe that friendships were strengthened as I watched people talking, visiting & meeting one another. A great big thanks to all of those that helped pull this together. The Summit Neighborhood Watch Block Captains worked hard at making this event happen! Also, Thank you for those West Valley City officials that attended...Chief "Buzz" Nielsen, Assistant Chief Mike Wells, Officer Buchanan, Craig, Owen, WVC Firefighters from station 71, Council Member at-large Cory Rushton, NNO Knight & McGruff, and members from the Community Preservation Committee! Also, thank you to the residents who let us bombard their lawns & front yards! Thank you to Molly & Michelle for cooking the hot dogs. We had a great time...and we're looking forward to next year! If you didn't get a chance to get your child's ID & DNA kit, let me know & we'll get you the paperwork. This event was designed to prevent crime & that will happen when we get to know each other & we'll be more willing to "look out for each other". I've been asking the city for street lights on 6200 South between that very same stretch for over 2 years... I think it's about time to visit City Council again. Would anyone be willing to go with me? They need to see that it is more people, not just myself that is concerned. The more people...the better it will be. Let me know if you would be willing to go!

There have been several questions regarding some information in the "spring clean-up guide". The statement being: Parking on an un-surfaced area is prohibited. Make sure all vehicles and trailers are parked on an appropriate solid surfaced area. By June 2010 all parking areas from the front corner of the house to the street will be required to be surfaced with concrete or asphalt. Gravel already in place will no longer be an acceptable parking surface.

This has raised some questions from residents. One friend, wanted to know where in the actual city code this was addressed. I talked with my Neigborhood Services contact, Craig Thomas & he sent me the following information. He said, "Okay - it was adopted May 2005. The reference in City Code is 7-9-115 (see attached). Code Enforcement will be the ones enforcing the code. If you go to the City webpage, there is a box on the left side that says "Code and Ordinances" click on it and it takes you to the City Code. Then click on "Title 7 - Land Use Development and Management Act" it will open the document I attached. Page 83-84 has section 115 that talks about surfacing.

Here is that specific information:

7-9-115. SURFACING.
The following requirements apply to all new off-street parking spaces and maneuvering areas as of May 1, 2005. Off-street parking spaces and maneuvering areas that do not meet one or more of the following requirements and were completed prior to May 1, 2005 must comply with the following requirements by June 1, 2010.
(1) All minimum number of
off-street parking spaces and maneuvering areas shall be paved and permanently
maintained with asphalt or concrete with the following exceptions:
(a)
Agricultural and heavy equipment uses will be evaluated as to their impact on
City streets, neighboring properties and the subject property with appropriate
dustless surfacing to be determined by the Zoning Administrator. Access to
detached garages which provide parking areas in excess of minimum parking stall
numbers, shall provide an appropriate dustless surface provided the minimum
front yard driveway is paved with asphalt or cement. A dustless surface can be
gravel provided the gravel is a minimum of two inches deep and contained with
durable borders.
(b) Surfacing standards for single family dwelling and duplex lots are found in Subsection 2 below.
(2) All off-street parking areas
for single family dwelling or duplex lots shall meet the following standards:
(a) All parking and maneuvering areas shall be paved and permanently maintained with a hard-surface with the following exceptions:
(i) Access to detached garages, which provide parking areas in excess of the minimum required parking spaces, shall be either gravel or a hard-surface provided the front yard access is a hard-surface.
(ii)
Recreational vehicles such as boats and campers that are used infrequently shall
be parked on either gravel or a hardsurface if they are placed in the rear yard
or a side yard that is not adjacent to a public or private street. The access to
recreational vehicle parking spaces may be through landscaping, as defined in
Section 7-1-103, provided the landscaping is maintained in a healthy
condition.
(iii) Parking and maneuvering areas in excess of the minimum required parking spaces shall be either gravel or a hard-surface if they are within the rear yard or a side yard that is not adjacent to a public or private street, except as provided in
(ii) above.
(b) Whenever gravel is used for parking in a residential zone, the gravel must be a minimum of two inches deep, compacted, free of grass and weeds, and contained with durable borders.
(c) For the purposes of Section 7-9-115 Subsection 2, a hard-surface shall only include concrete, asphalt, brick pavers and stone.

(d) Hard surfaced
parking strips with a minimum width of two feet (2’) each may be used for
parking and maneuvering areas instead of a solid driveway. Landscaping, as
defined in Section 7-1-103, must be installed and maintained in a healthy
condition between the parking strips. For the purposes of the determining the
hard surface percentage in the front yard for item e below, the landscaped space
between the parking strips shall be included in the hard surface percentage.
(e) In order to allow double driveways, and to allow hard-surface
access to the rear yard, up to, but not more than, 40 percent of a front yard
may be covered with a hardsurface. Lots with duplexes, twin home lots,
cul-de-sac lots, or lots on major streets needing circular driveways may
increase the hard-surface percent to 50 percent.
3) All off-street vehicle parking must occur in an area that meets the requirements of Subsections 1 and 2 of Section 7-9-115. No parking shall be allowed in landscaped areas.

Spring Guide to Property Maintenance

Keep vehicles, lumber, fencing, bushes, and other items from obstructing or blocking the sidewalk. Make sure your trees are trimmed seven feet above the sidewalk and 14 feet above the street to provide a safe and clear route for vehicles and passersby.
Front yard landscaping is required on both sides of the driveway and in the parkway. Landscaping needs to be maintained in a live, healthy condition.
Parking on an un-surfaced area is prohibited. Make sure all vehicles and trailers are parked on an appropriate solid surfaced area. By June 2010 all parking areas from the front corner of the house to the street will be required to be surfaced with concrete or asphalt. Gravel already in place will no longer be an acceptable parking surface.
Trash & debris need to be placed in an enclosed container and not allowed to accumulate or blow off of your property. Boxes, along with other outside storage are not permitted and need to be placed in an enclosed structure, such as a shed.
All weeds need to be cut and maintained at a height not to exceed six inches, thus reducing rodent and insect harborage, and to prevent fires. Weeds cut below six inches do not constitute landscaping.
All vehicles kept on the property need to be operable and licensed, or stored in an enclosed structure, such as a garage.
Yard, garage, basement or other similar sales are not allowed more than four times each year, and each sale cannot last more than 72 hours.
Graffiti must be removed within 24 hours. The City can offer limited assistance. Please call 963-3289 for more information.

BULKY WASTE

Bulky Waste Removel is a way for residents to get rid of those big, bulky waste items that don’t fit in with their regular garbage pickup service. All material must be boxed, bagged, or bundled. Nothing over 5 feet long or 75 pounds is allowed. Absolutely NO hazardous materials. Bulky Waste is picked up once a month and corresponds with an area’s regular garbage pickup date. NEIGHBORHOOD DUMPSTERS

Once a year, per area, residents, volunteer groups and neighborhood associations may schedule 10 dumpsters for neighborhood cleanup projects. The dumpsters are delivered and picked up two days later. Groups must advertise the cleanup project, collect the debris and load it into the dumpsters.If you have questions, please call Public Works at 955-3720.

Vial of Life Program

This month the West Valley City Neighborhood Services Office in partnership with the West Valley City Fire and Police Departments, Pioneer Valley Hospital and the West Valley City Community Corps Council launched a new program called the “Vial of Life.” This program is for West Valley City residents only.

The Vial of Life is an emergency preparedness program to help make West Valley City more disaster resistant and resilient through citizen volunteer involvement. The purpose of the Vial of Life program is to encourage residents, particularly those who are home bound, living alone,
or with special medical needs, to compile personal information and place it where it can be easily located by 911 responders in the event of an emergency. The vial comes with a personal information sheet, a vial to keep the information sheet(s) in, and a refrigerator magnet to place on the refrigerator door to alert emergency personal of the homes participation in the program. Driver Feedback Signs

I just wanted to ask you a favor regarding our Driver Feedback Signs on Wakefield, Laurel Canyon & High Bluff. I was asked by the WVC Public Works Department to keep an eye on the signs. There has been some vandalism & tampering with them. Each sign was a significant amount of money. We need these in our neighborhoods to remind people to slow down...for the safety of our families! I especially don't want the city to perceive that we are ungrateful for these signs, we need to take care of them as much as we can. Please...keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior around these signs. So...if you see anything odd...please call the police 840-4000. Just wanted to remind you to make sure your garage door is closed! There have been a few times I have stopped or called to tell people that their garage door is opened. Unfortunately, a neighbor had their garage & cars ransacked, because they forgot to close their garage. There are people who simply look for these "crimes of opportunity". By following a few simple steps we can combat & prevent crime. As you are going to bed for the night, make sure you check windows, doors & garage doors to make sure they are closed & locked. Also, turn on all of your sensor lights, porch light & side lights. If you happen to awaken in the night, look out your windows to check for suspicious behavior. And if you have that panic button on your key ring, keep it on your nightstand & if you see or hear suspicious behavior, push the panic button & it will scare people off. If we "look out for each other"...we can all help one another!

ICE - In Case of Emergency

In the event of daily emergencies which we all may be involved in, the West Valley City Fire Department is asking for your assistance. In an emergency, fire and police personnel who respond want to treat you quickly and also notify your family and friends about the incident and needs which you may have.

With ICE, first responders and hospital staff will turn to a victim's mobile phone address book and know immediately who to contact. When seconds matter, this information may be vital. For example, the emergency contact may be able to provide critical information about the victim's medical history.

The idea is to store the word ICE in the address book of mobile phones with the name and phone number of the person that should be contacted in the event that the cell phone owner is injured and unable to communicate this information. For more than one contact name and priority, use ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc. It's that simple!

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

I was so sad to get a phone call from a resident, also my friend, to hear about some vandalism to their property. It is devastating to wake up to this on your fence. It just makes me sick to know that someone did this, in probably 30 seconds or less...on such a busy street. This fence faces Laurel Canyon Dr. If you are on your way to work, school, errands...please keep your eyes open for any suspicious behavior. When I dropped by to document this by taking pictures, I was impressed to see neighbors helping neighbors. One resident, Matt B. brought over some stuff called Automotive Paint Reducer, it wiped it clean... Good to know in case it happens again.

I urge, beg, plead for your assistance in keeping your eyes open. There is TOO MUCH vandalism in our neighborhoods, especially graffiti. I just want to get a handle on it.

If you have a porch light - turn it on!
If you have side lights - turn them on!
If you have a backyard light - turn it on!
If your lights on the sides of your garage are burned out - replace
them!

Having regular lights or motion detector lights have been proven to reduce crime. If I am awakened by my children in the night, I always take the opportunity to look out my windows to see if there is anything going on...anything suspicious. It only takes a second...to look out for each other. If all of us do this...it will make such a difference!

Community Service Officers...

The Community Services Division is a newly formed division which combines the principles of community oriented policing with those of intelligence led policing. The personnel of the division incorporate traditional policing methods with a broader problem solving approach that involves police, residents, businesses and other city and county services working together to improve the quality of life in each neighborhood. Each community service officer, or CSO, is assigned to a specific area of West Valley City. It is the officer’s responsibility to work with the residents and businesses in that area to identify problems and act as a liaison between the involved parties and the resources that they need to resolve their problems.

The division is currently comprised of six CSO’s, a DARE officer, a sergeant, an intelligence analyst and a captain. The intelligence analyst gathers information on the people involved in crimes. They look for similarities in modus operandi, suspect description and suspect vehicle description. They then use this information to develop suspects in crimes. They can also use the databases at their disposal to help locate these suspects and their associates. The intelligence analyst is another powerful resource to help the CSO’s to be more successful in resolving crime problems and disrupting criminal activity.

In addition to the intelligence analyst, the CSO’s also have access to the services of a crime analyst. The crime analyst ’s job is to gather statistics on crimes that are occurring and to inform the officers of any similarities or patterns in those crimes. The crime analyst can help pinpoint the day of the week, time of day and geographical area in which the crimes are occurring. This information helps the CSO’s to direct their efforts in solving these crimes making it more likely they will catch the perpetrators. It also helps them to educate the citizens in those areas as to what they can do to reduce their chances of becoming a victim of crime.

You, our community members, are an important piece to making this type of policing work. We need you to be active in your neighborhoods, by looking for suspicious people and activities and then reporting them through a patrol officer or to your neighborhood Community Service Officer ( Officer J. Buchanan...also notify your block captian or myself). The CSO’s will take this information use it to work with you and your neighbors to form a plan of action to resolve these issues and coordinate the efforts of the other divisions within the police department to implement these plans.

I received an email from Erik from the Public Works department with WVC. I found this to be great news... (By the way, I know that the only way to "solve this problem" is if we, as the residents, slow down! I understand we all get in a hurry...but we need to remember that the maximum speed limit is 25 mph.) This is what he wrote:

Hi Renee,
We've purchased six new driver feedback signs and will be installing them
on High Bluff, Wakefield and Laurel Canyon. These won't solve the problem,
but the hope is that more drivers will be aware of how fast they are going and
slow down a little. We'll continue to collect information with the signs
in place to see how effective they are and if something else will need to be
considered.
As far as street lights go, I am putting together a program so that we can
get the funding to install lights where they are needed. Thanks for bringing
6200 South to my attention.

Winter Parking Guidelines

ON-STREET PARKING
It is dangerous and difficult to plow streets clogged with parked vehicles. Some streets,
especially cul-de-sacs may not be plowed, if plows can not safely drive down them. The
most helpful thing residents can do to facilitate snow removal is to get their cars off the
street, and encourage others to do the same.

To facilitate snow removal, City ordinance prohibits on-street parking whenever there is
snow or ice on the road. Any vehicles parked on a West Valley City street after an
accumulation of ice or snow of one inch or more will be subject to ticketing and towing.
(WVC Code 24-4-111)

22-2-115. TIME LIMITATIONS.
No vehicle shall be parked on any street:
(1) While there is an accumulation of snow or ice of one inch or more on the roadway;
(2) For a period of longer than 72 consecutive hours; or
(3) For any period longer than allowed by appropriate signs, markings, or parking meters giving notice of such parking time limitation.

22-2-119. AUTHORITY TO MOVE OR REMOVE ILLEGALLY-PARKED VEHICLES.
(1) Whenever a peace officer determines that a vehicle parked in violation of this Chapter must be moved to avoid public inconvenience, ensure public safety, or because it appears to be abandoned, the officer is authorized to move the vehicle, cause it to be removed, or to order the owner or operator of the vehicle to move or remove it.
(2) A peace officer who causes a vehicle to be removed under this Section shall have the vehicle removed by a tow truck service that meets the standards established by Title 72, Chapter 9, Utah Code Annotated 1953, as amended, and that is authorized by the Police Department to perform towing services for the City.
(3) The City shall not be liable for any lost, damaged, or stolen items or damage to any vehicle moved or removed pursuant to this Section.
(4) The registered owner of a vehicle removed under this Section is strictly liable for all costs of removal.

Our goal is to have every home participate in this Neighborhood Food Drive. A goal of 10 cans per home, collecting between December 1-15.

Great items to donate include: tuna, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, canned fruit & veggies, baby formula & baby food, soup...etc.

Some of my thoughts....My husband found out at the end of September that he was going to lose his job on Dec 14th. We were devastated. We
thought that his job was secure...the news literally blew us out of our comfort level. The weeks that followed were filled with anxiety & stress. Trying to make ends meet is a bit stressful at times, but we've always felt secure...However, the unknown was getting the best of us. I worried...enough for the both of us...but I know that we have family to lean on, in the worst case scenario. (Thankfully, my husband was just offered a job this past week!) But the thought that there are families who struggle with no one to turn to just tugs at my heart. I couldn't imagine that feeling of hopelessness... I wanted to do something, even as small as a food drive, to help. I can't imagine families or children being hungry, especially during the holiday's when it seems like desserts & treats multiply in the fridge! To think of families without the bare necessities, is haunting. So, every year, neighbors spend so much time & money making holiday goodies for each other. While these acts of friendship are always appreciated, perhaps we could do something better with all of that time & money...instead of leaving gifts on each other's doorsteps, maybe we can combine our efforts to help those who are less fortunate than we are. Let's band together & help the Utah Food Bank!!

A great big THANKS to two alert citizens in our neighborhood who recognized suspicious behavior & called the Police! These are just 2 images from the graffiti on the LDS Church in our neighborhood. I am saddened by this lack of respect... I have seen these markings on the cement walls, fences, street signs, electrical boxes...everywhere. We need to keep our eyes open for suspicious behavior & learn to recognize it. If you see something, call the police...the non-emergency # is 840-4000 (if you are witnessing the crime in action, tell the dispatcher it is in progress). In order for our neighborhood watch to work, we need to band together & do our part to "look out for each other"! Please, don't confront anyone, that is not our job...we are the eyes & ears...call the police & let them do their job! Please, please PLEASE, report crimes to the police!

I am serving on the Vision West 2030 Steering Committee, Existing Neighborhoods Taskforce Sub-Committee. I have enjoyed working on this project for the Planning Commission. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to have an opinion in such an important document. In these meetings we have discussed many issues that current, existing neighborhoods face in West Valley. The number one concern among all neighborhoods was the issue facing neighborhoods zoned for Single Family residences...and having people illegally rent out their property. What does this mean? It means...to put it in very simple terms: It is illegal to rent out a room, or basement, or any part of your home in the Diamond Summit subdivision. If you are, you are breaking the law.

We discussed this issue in several meetings...sometimes for hours at length. Those of us on this sub-committee came up with several ideas & possible solutions to this problem & have presented them to the Planning Commission. A visit with the WVC Police Chief

Wow...I had the opportunity to meet with Buzz Nielsen, the West Valley Police Chief today. Last night, after the city council presentation, he came over to me & asked if he could meet with me. He asked if he could come over to my home so that he'd have time to drive through the neighborhood. So, today at 2 pm...he came to my home. We had a wonderful conversation. I was very appreciative that he took time from his very busy schedule to visit with me & talk about my concerns. He said that he had driven all throughout Diamond Summit to observe things. We talked about many things, however, our focus (of course) was the speeding problems...especially on High Bluff, Laurel Canyon & Wakefield. He told me that the City Council definitely has their attention on Diamond Summit...because they had a meeting this morning & said that my presentation & the presentation by Public Works in the study session previous to the City Council meeting, brought a lot of issues to their attention.

The Chief also said that he is in need of more officers & is working on a solution for Diamond Summit. He knows that something has to be done. And wants to work with us on this situation of speeding. We talked about several different possibilitites to help, in the immediate future... Because he pointed out, as city council did...that working with Public Works...for signage & other measures, takes time. BUT...the police can do things to help us out. I am grateful for the opportunity I had to meet with him to discuss & be heard about these important problems.

I just wanted to take a moment & thank all of those who attended the City Council meeting with me tonight. I know that it might be awhile before we see the fruits of our labors, but there is no doubt in my mind, that our subdivision will have some changes in the near future. I appreciate the support of you, as residents & the support of our Councilman, Steve Vincent. Craig Thomas, who is a huge support & helps guide me through this NW process! This subject is so important to me...I know that we can make a difference, if we just try.

Also, our C.O.P. Officer, Officer Buchanan, who has been in our neighborhood to observe traffic. He gave me the copies of the report from his observations...he gave 3 citations to people who were speeding. These were the speeds, 42 mph, 42 mph, 41 mph. That is almost double the actual speed limit. He would have spent more time, but he had to arrest somebody... But he promised he'll be back...maybe tomorrow or Thursday!

I am at stage 2 of my plan for requesting "traffic calming" measures in our neighborhood! I'm going to speak at Open Forum at the city council meeting at city hall on NOVEMBER 13th. I would like to invite you all to come with me...with your families - especially your children...to show support for this cause & to show the city that we really do want a resolution to this problem. The meeting starts at 6:30 PM. I know that it would be so much more effective if people came with me...instead of just showing up by myself. I know that this might be an inconvienence for you, but I plead with you to come with me to show the city that we care about safety in our neighborhood, for our children. Our C.O.P. Officer sat on High Bluff to monitor speed this past week. I should be receiving the results sometime this week. I will post the information when I get it. Safety Tips for Halloween

Here are some safety tips for the Trick or Treaters in our neighborhood:

Eat a good meal before trick-or-treating.
Wear reflective clothing.
Carry a flashlight or some type of lighting device.
Use sidewalks when going up to homes and don’t cut through yards.
A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds.
Children should not enter a stranger’s home or car, even if invited. Talk with your children about this important rule.
Homeowners should not invite children inside.
Accept treats only in the doorway, not from anyone on the street.
Parents should examine all candy before eating it.
Plan your entire route and make sure that your family knows what it is.
Be very cautious of strangers.
Only trick-or-treat at homes that have their porch light on.
Walk...don't run.
Cross the street at the corner or in a crosswalk.
Wear a watch.
Don't play near lit jack-o-lanterns.
Take a cell phone with you, if possible.
Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. If wearing a mask, make sure that eye openings are big enough for peripheral vision.

Some Safety tips for the parents:

Turn on your porch light.
Move lit Jack-O-Lanterns off the porch where kids get bunched up if they are trick-or-treating in groups.
Remove objects from your yard that might present a hazard.
Drive slowly all evening...you never know what creature may suddenly cross your path.
Report ANY suspicious or criminal activity to the police at 840-4000, or if necessary 911.

For adults who are celebrating there are some things to consider when creating that "perfect" Halloween Costume.

Make sure that any accessories, such as fake guns, knifes, and other potentially dangerous items are not mistaken for the real thing.
Fire safety and visibility are also important for adult costumes. Apply the same standards to adult costumes as you do to your children's.
Remember adults that are dressed up can be pretty scary to young children.

Did you know that failure to follow any of the following parking guidelines could get you a ticket?

Vehicles should not block or extend into a public sidewalk.
Vehicles should not be parked in front of a public or private driveway.
Vehicles should not be parked within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.
Vehicles should not be parked within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.
Vehicles should not be parked within 30 feet of a stop sign.
Vehicles can not be double parked on the street.
Vehicles need to be parked within 12 inches of the curb on the street.
Vehicles should not be parked on the stret facing into normal traffic flow.
Vehicles parked on any road must be registered with proper registration validation on display.

Take Pride in our Community!

West Valley City urges you to take pride in our community. They offer the following suggestions:

Keep your lawn & parking strip watered, fertilized & free from weeds. Mow it regularly.
If you remove landscaping from the front yard, the remaining landscaping can not be less than 60% of the front yard. Park strips are generally landscaped but each subdivision can have their own requirements.
Do not park cars on the lawns.
Trim your bushes & shrubs to keep them looking neat.
Observe the speed limits. Residential zones are 25 mph.
Remove your garbage cans from the streets as soon after the weekly pickup as possible. Cans left on the street can be an invitation to thieves.
Sweep your gutters regularly & keep drain grills free from debris.
Keep leaves raked up & dispose of them properly.
Turn on your porch lights from dusk to dawn. It only costs pennies per day. This serves as a great crime prevention tool.
Remove sale & lost signs immediately.
Grocery carts belong to the stores. It is a crime to remove them from the store parking lot.
There should be no loud noise between 10:00pm & 7:00am. This includes music, car honking, revving of engines or parties.

Lighting Safety Tips

These are some great tips/reminders from the West Valley City Neighborhood Services department!

Lighting can be one of the greatest deterrents to crime in our community. Carefully consider the following suggestions:

Leave lights on when you go out at night. Timers can be used to give the impression someone is home, turning lights on & off.
Leave porch lights on at night to illuminate your yard & home. It is estimated that a 75 watt light bulb will light your yard for less than $29 a year.
Motion lights have become very affordable in recent years. Install motion lights in your yard to help illuminate areas like driveways, side yards & back yards.
Think like a criminal. Turn on your outside lights & evaluate dark areas, look for areas you can hide in the shadows. If you can hide, so can a criminal. Adjust your outside lighting or landscaping to help eliminate these hiding places.
Make sure your street lights are working. Let the power company know when lights are no longer working.
Maintain your outside lighting. Replace bulbs when they stop working.

A well lit street & neighborhood can be a great deterrent to criminal activity. An alert neighborhood with residents "looking out for each other" is also needed!

BE ALERT!

Watch for activity that does not belong in our neighborhood & let the Police (840-4000) know & your Neighborhood Watch Block Captain know immediately!

Valley Emergency Communications Center

VECC...the dispatch center for most of the valley's law enforcement & medical agencies! I had the priviledge of going there to see the "behind the scene's" of a 911 call, and the dispatchers who work with the police officers. What an amazing facility!! In fact, I went on Friday, September 28th...but needed a few days to absorb it all & to sort it out in my mind. I sat with a lady who has been a dispatcher for over 20 years. She showed me the many things that go into a simple 911 call & how they relay that information to the police. I also sat with the people who take the phone calls from the public...I had the opportunity to listen in on some 911 calls. Ok, 911 is for emergencies...not to ask for the time, or directions! Oh my goodness...it's like people don't realize that 911 is for emergencies!

There were some really intense calls that made my adrenaline soar....& some that made me sick to my stomach. One call had me in tears ( I thought I was doing good at hiding it) but the call taker said...that they have to distance their feelings, or it would be just too tough to do their job. I was amazed at how calm the dispatchers were, & thank goodness so that they can relay the important information.

I learned a few things that night... I think first & foremost is that there is a need to educate on how to make a 911 call. Usually emotions are running high if a 911 call needs to be placed. But, from talking with the dispatchers, it's so very important to give the essential facts first. Don't give a long-winded story...that just takes up important time. They need the absolute facts first...but even if emotions are high, they will guide you through to get the information. I also learned that it is so important for the public to work together with law enforcement...

I learned that I need to give my children extra hugs, extra kisses, check & make sure the doors & windows are locked & do all that I can to make sure my home is a safe place for my family!

I'm really grateful for the opportunity that I had to visit the VECC facility, it opened my eyes even more! I promise I will do all that I can to help this Neighborhood Watch successful in our neighborhood, but I do need your help & support.
