Open Garages...

This is an email I received from Officer Lynes:

Hi Renee,

Today (06-02-2014) my partner Officer Scott Arnold and I drove through your neighborhood numerous times. From 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. tonight I focused on making contact at homes where I found the garage doors wide open. I located 31 open garages in 1/4 of the neighborhood. So if that trend stayed true throughout the whole Diamond Summit area, I estimate there could have been as many as 130 open garage doors. I plan on continuing... to go through the area this week and talking to those who have their garage doors open. I thought you said you had a Facebook profile for your area. If you do, could you post something on your areas Facebook profile about making sure to leave garage doors closed if your not in the garage or in sight of the garage. Getting that info out and making sure garages are not left open will help us curb thefts.

Thank you for your time,
Officer Mike Lynes
West Valley City P.D.
Community Response Unit.

Incident on 5-27-2014

Received this info from a resident within Diamond Summit:

Saw the following about 30 minutes ago while returning from a bicycle ride:

little silver'ish gray/blue
nissan pickup
utah license plate # D04 2BU
...
2 Hispanic males
1 older male, long grey'ish black hair, 5'6" to 5'10
1 younger male, dark black short hair, stayed in the truck

Took a metal drip pan from the side of a house on the south end of blossom valley lane. Then came around to pine valley lane and asked one neighbor, and I for any used metal we have.  Don't know if it's related to the recent garage thefts, and don't want to make something out of nothing, but worth keeping an eye out!

Thank you to this resident for keeping an eye out & collecting detailed information!!!

Also, a great reminder that people are rummaging through our yards & to call when you see this sort of activity.  And to not keep valuables outside.

FYI: Please Watch This Video

This video was captured by a West Jordan resident on their surveillance video.  This same truck & men have been spotted in Diamond Summit.  In our same neighborhood, on the West Jordan side, they were spotted on Liza Ln stealing a generator off of a trailer.

Please be on the look out for this vehicle.  They are driving around looking for items to steal out of open garages, or items left out in yards, anything actually...

Please check your garage doors & close them!!  The more garage doors left open, the more they will attract people looking for the opportunity to get in them.  If you see your neighbor's garage open before you go to bed - please call them or go over there!

Let's look out for each other, let's call the police when we see something suspicious!  It's the only way we'll keep our neighborhood safe!

Do you know your kid's "Friends"?

Last night, KSL reporter Debbie Dujanovic, did a great story on Social Media safety!  You can find the story HERE

Are your kids on Snapchat, Ask.fm, or instagram?  Do you know what their privacy settings are?  Did you know that some of these social media sites do not have privacy settings?  Meaning anyone can contact them or send them pictures...  Be involved, be aware!  "Look out for each other" - especially those in your own family!

Attempted Break In

Just saw a friend's status on facebook regarding an attempted break-in at her home.  This is what she wrote:

Hey friends- my house was almost broken into just a few minutes ago. He was a white male, slender build, wearing a dark knit cap, drove away in a gray Subaru. He knocked and rang the doorbell forever, than moved to the backyard to open the sliding glass door. I screamed at him and told him to get out and he ran away. Keep your eyes open!!!

Let's be on alert...please call the police if you see anything suspicious!

Criminal Activity Averted Due to QUICK Thinking Resident!!

I received some information from a resident on Laurel Canyon today - just a few homes North of Mill Valley Ln.  Kudos to our quick thinking resident who did many things right to prevent a crime!  Here is the info she passed on:

I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred this morning around noon. A white Ford truck pulled up and parked in between our house and the Anderson's house. I watched the guys get out of the truck and walk towards the Anderson's home. Knowing that neither of the Anderson's were home, I kept an eye on the guys. They approached the work truck of the neighbor on the South side of the Anderson's and started opening the side and back compartments of the truck. I stepped outside onto my front porch and asked them if I could help them with something. They replied that they "worked with him". I told them that I would just step back inside and give my neighbor a call. They stood there for a few... seconds and then started to head back to their truck. I immediately called the police. The guys took off pretty quick. I did notice that they had a black bike in the back of the truck. It all happened so fast that I was only able to a partial license plate. The police came and took my statement and also spoke to the neighbor, who confirmed they were not coworkers. Please let people know to make sure cars and trucks, especially work trucks, are locked up, along with bikes put away and garages closed. The officer that took my statement said work trucks are specifically targeted. I am also assuming they swiped the bike, especially with the way it was placed in the back of the truck.

The two guys were probably between 180-200 pounds and probably between 5'10' and 6'. One was Hispanic and wearing a black and white baseball cap with a grey hoodie. The other guy was Polynesian and wearing a dark colored t-shirt with a black knit cap. The truck was a white Ford, fairly new, probably from the last couple of years. There was an X and a 4 in the last three digits of the license plate. It was a white, Ski Utah license plate. It was a quad cab and on the sides of the truck I thought it said F140 with a gold stripe under the words. But I am wondering if it was F150. It all happened so fast, but I am still kicking myself for not taking a picture with my phone. I probably had time to do that.

A few things to mention...WAY TO GO neighbor who was familiar with what cars are normal & what looks out of place! She most likely prevented a burglary!!!! Simple eyes & ears & familiarity is key here! Also, brazen to have this occur in the middle of the day. Please, if you are home - keep your eyes open for what is "normal"! And....way to go to call the police asap! Neighborhood watch works when you "look out for each other"!  And, "Neighbor lady" called 911, which was perfect...911 is totally the best option for an "IN PROGRESS" crime.
