Criminal Activity Averted Due to QUICK Thinking Resident!!

I received some information from a resident on Laurel Canyon today - just a few homes North of Mill Valley Ln.  Kudos to our quick thinking resident who did many things right to prevent a crime!  Here is the info she passed on:

I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred this morning around noon. A white Ford truck pulled up and parked in between our house and the Anderson's house. I watched the guys get out of the truck and walk towards the Anderson's home. Knowing that neither of the Anderson's were home, I kept an eye on the guys. They approached the work truck of the neighbor on the South side of the Anderson's and started opening the side and back compartments of the truck. I stepped outside onto my front porch and asked them if I could help them with something. They replied that they "worked with him". I told them that I would just step back inside and give my neighbor a call. They stood there for a few... seconds and then started to head back to their truck. I immediately called the police. The guys took off pretty quick. I did notice that they had a black bike in the back of the truck. It all happened so fast that I was only able to a partial license plate. The police came and took my statement and also spoke to the neighbor, who confirmed they were not coworkers. Please let people know to make sure cars and trucks, especially work trucks, are locked up, along with bikes put away and garages closed. The officer that took my statement said work trucks are specifically targeted. I am also assuming they swiped the bike, especially with the way it was placed in the back of the truck.

The two guys were probably between 180-200 pounds and probably between 5'10' and 6'. One was Hispanic and wearing a black and white baseball cap with a grey hoodie. The other guy was Polynesian and wearing a dark colored t-shirt with a black knit cap. The truck was a white Ford, fairly new, probably from the last couple of years. There was an X and a 4 in the last three digits of the license plate. It was a white, Ski Utah license plate. It was a quad cab and on the sides of the truck I thought it said F140 with a gold stripe under the words. But I am wondering if it was F150. It all happened so fast, but I am still kicking myself for not taking a picture with my phone. I probably had time to do that.

A few things to mention...WAY TO GO neighbor who was familiar with what cars are normal & what looks out of place! She most likely prevented a burglary!!!! Simple eyes & ears & familiarity is key here! Also, brazen to have this occur in the middle of the day. Please, if you are home - keep your eyes open for what is "normal"! And....way to go to call the police asap! Neighborhood watch works when you "look out for each other"!  And, "Neighbor lady" called 911, which was perfect...911 is totally the best option for an "IN PROGRESS" crime.

Crime Stats

Here are some crime stats for Diamond Summit for the past 7 months!
{Please click on picture for a larger text.}

I have talked with many residents who have situations where they have failed to call the police.  It is very important to report everything from suspicious vehicles, bikes being stolen to having your car broken into!  This is the only way to have accurate crime stats in our neighborhood!

WVC PD's Community Services Division Change

Officer Buchanan spoke with me directly about this...it is something I am so very disappointed about.

Beginning January 19 the Community Services Section has been ordered to report to the Patrol Section for temporary reassignment. It is our understanding that they will be there for 4 months until low staffing levels in the police department can be corrected with new hires. For matters that require police attention, please make use of the emergency and non-emergency dispatch numbers. 911 or (801) 840-4000

For matters needing additional police support, similar to what you would have requested from your Community Services Police Officer, please direct those requests to Lieutenant Scott Buchanan. scott.buchanan@wvc-ut.gov or (801) 963-3309. He will make every attempt to assist you, or ...have a patrol officer respond.

Again, this is a temporary reassignment, the community services officers should be returning to their areas in 4 months. If you have concerns about this situation, I would ask that you please share those with your City Council members, and/or City Manager Wayne Pyle.

There is also a survey that takes about 3 mintues to share your concerns about the city. I would highly recommend taking THIS opportunity to voice your opinions!

School Lockdown...Update.

A resident on Laurel Canyon (by the Wakefield intersection) emailed me this: My neighbor a few houses down from me just called me and told me their house was broken into. It happened at 12:30. A guy was walking around knocking on doors and he knocked on their door, but she didn't answer or let on that anyone was home. He started pounding on the door and then left. About 2 minutes later he kicked in their basement door. The dog went after him and he escaped. He was wearing a black hoodie and black pants.

I spoke with Officer Buchanan & he verified this.  He also said that police set up a perrimeter & used K9's to seek out the suspect.   They were unable to locate the individual.

It's a good reminder to keep your eye out around your home & your neighbors!  If you see something out of place, please call the police!

-A good tip from Lt. Merritt (from the post below)
We have a non-emergency phone number that may be used in lieu of 911 that is open to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When should you call it instead of 911? When you need to report a crime that is no longer in progress and doesn't require an immediate response. For instance, you notice someone sprayed graffiti on a nearby wall. Call the non-emergency phone number. But, let's say you come home and find your neighbor's garage door open with a suspicious vehicle backed up in the driveway. Your neighbors are on vacation and no one should be in their home. Call 911. Call 911 even if the suspects leave seconds after you discover them.

If you are ever in doubt, do not be afraid to call 911. No one has ever been reprimanded for calling 911 instead of the non-emergency number....that is, except for the person who calls 911 to report the light burned out in their refrigerator. And yes, we did get that phone call once. :-)
